How do I enjoy Cardboard apps on Daydream?

When it comes to phone based VR, Google has now delivered two awesome ways to experience things with Google Cardboard, and the new Google Daydream. If you've been enjoying Daydream, you might be wondering if there is a way to enjoy your favorite Cardboard experiences with the new Daydream View. Have no fear, it's quite easy to play your old favorites, and we've got all the details for you here!

Not exactly backwards compatible

The great thing about Google Daydream is that it's entirely capable of running Google Cardboard games and experiences, because the headsets themselves are so similarly built. There are a few small but significant exceptions, though. Basically as long as you're hoping to enjoy a game, or experience that only relies on head movement then you're good to go.

If you were hoping to play a game that requires you to press a button though, you're out of luck. Google Daydream uses a remote to interact with apps and games, so there isn't a button on the headset to press. While this might be a bummer, you still get access to most of the content that Google Cardboard offers.

How to play Google Cardboard games on Google Daydream

There is a single hoop to jump through in order to enjoy Google Cardboard games on your Daydream headset. When you put your phone into Daydream View. it touches an NFC tag which immediately sends the phone into Daydream mode. To play a Cardboard game, you just need to keep your phone from jumping into Daydream mode.

To do this, all you need to do is go into the settings of your phone and turn off NFC. At this point, your Daydream headset will work just like a Cardboard headset. That means that all you need to do is open up the Cardboard game that you want to play, put your phone into the headset, and enjoy yourself. When you're ready to return to a Daydream game, all you'll need to do is turn the NFC mode back on, and you're good to go.

Step by step directions

  1. Open up the settings on your phone
  2. Turn off NFC
