Both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive now support room-scale gameplay, with a recent wave of room-scale titles debut for both platforms. Giving players the ability to roam a significant virtual space, games that implement this feature gain another layer of immersion that differentiates them from the competition.
But where can you get the best experience? These are our favorite HTC Vive titles with the best implementations of room-scale!
There's undoubtedly been no shortage of gallery shooters for the HTC Vive, but traditional FPS multiplayer experiences are yet to gain traction in virtual reality. While there's been a recent growth of online shooters on console and PC, the limitations of today's consumer hardware hold back their potential to thrive in the virtual reality space.
With a majority of titles using teleportation to navigate large spaces, this leads to an unpredictable and inconsistent type of movement which isn't suited for competitive online multiplayer. Onward looks past this shortcoming, taking advantage of the HTC Vive's trackpad as a method of player movement. Although room-scale is still used for the slighter movements, the culmination of these two features makes for an intuitive and responsive control input.
Unseen Diplomacy drops players in complex obstacle courses, offering an immersive, full-body experience for the HTC Vive. With small enclosed play spaces, Unseen Diplomacy creates the surrounding world with your play space in mind.
Lacking any alternate movement inputs, Unseen Diplomacy's levels are built around 'redirected walking', which forces the player to backtrack to find new areas. This builds large, yet physically impossible map layouts to explore, without exceeding the bounds of your play area.
Unseen Diplomacy requires a minimum floor space of 4m x 3m to play, but offers a truly innovative room-scale experience for the headset.
Out of all the titles to release across VR platforms, Job Simulator has emerged as one of the most appealing and accessible titles to new headset owners. As a game often bundled alongside the HTC Vive as a free download, Job Simulator is a great entry point for understanding common VR controls and room-scale movement.
Job Simulator takes place in various workplace environments, ranging from office cubicles to gourmet kitchens. Each of these environments scales to the size of your room, to take full advantage of the available space.
Giant Cop: Justice Above All
Even felt like being a giant, terrifying cop? Well, us neither – but you can now fulfil those fantasies in "Giant Cop: Justice Above All," a virtual reality experience for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift takes great advantage of room-scale. Thrown into the shoes of a police officer in a jazzy 1970's era world, Giant Cop allows players to watch over a miniature city, helping control crime across the city.
In a whacky adventure, players will explore the city and uncover the criminals the lie beneath the radar. Whether your actions actually help the civilians is an entirely different story, but still you'll be following an exciting journey alongside a comical twist. Taking advantage of the HTC Vive's room-scale and motion control capabilities, players can walk around and fully-interact with the world – making for a notably memorable room-scale title.
Arizona Sunshine arrived late last year for the HTC Vive and Oculus, offering a substantial first-person shooter experience taking place in a zombie apocalypse. With support for both headset's motion controllers, Arizona Sunshine is an outstanding example of how traditional triple-A game mechanics have a place in virtual reality.
The game takes full advantage of the HTC Vive's room-scale feature, with other movement options available for longer distances. Introduced in a recent update to the game, a number of locomotion variants are now available to choose from, which only complement the traditional room-scale experience.
Between its length single-player campaign and cooperative modes, Arizona Sunshine is a must-buy room-scale FPS for the HTC Vive.
A Chair in a Room: Greenwater
A Chair in a Room: Greenwater is a virtual reality horror experience which promotes environmental exploration to progress the narrative. The game takes advantage of room-scale in an unusual way, by repositioning the player's view between rooms.
When entering a doorway, the player is rotated to face the door. This requires a full 180-degree turn after entering each room, which keeps the player away from the boundaries of their play space. If you're looking for an immersive and consistent horror experience, look no further!
