SteamVR Home is an expansion of Valve's SteamVR service, which adds new social and interactive experiences to the platform. With the ability to create your own personal space and invite friends, the new features show continued growth of the Steam platform and its goal to accommodate desktop VR users.

Quests are one of the main pillars of SteamVR Home and currently one of the few activities available through the platform. These simple tasks, which require users to find objects hidden inside environments, are a great way to unlock new "props" for social spaces. And if you've spent much time with SteamVR Home up until this point, you'll have realized the initial set of props is limited, to say the least. Here's how to take advantage of SteamVR Home quests and unlock some new gear.

Enroll in the SteamVR beta

If you're not already a SteamVR Home user, you'll first need to enroll into the ongoing SteamVR beta. This version of the platform is where you'll see in progress features and tweaks ahead of their public rollout. Any Steam users enroll with the beta today and instantly get early access to these upcoming features. These are the steps to enroll your Steam account in the beta program.

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Navigate to Library > Tools via the top navigation bar.
  3. Right-click on SteamVR from the Tools list.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Navigate to the BETAS tab.
  6. Choose beta – SteamVR Beta update from the drop-down box.

After accepting the changes, you'll be entered into the SteamVR beta. After joining, your Steam client should automatically begin downloading a few hundred megabytes of files. After this has been installed, you'll be readying to jump into your first SteamVR home experience.

Note: As a piece of software still in development, you may experience some minor issues when using the SteamVR beta. If you experience any problems with SteamVR, you may need to revert to the public release.

Completing Quests in SteamVR Home

Quests are a way to unlock new props in SteamVR Home, by completing fetching tasks in certain environments. At this point in time, Quests require users to find items scattered around the various environments, in undisclosed locations. Although finding these items is never too hard, you'll have to go out of your way to hunt down items in specific environments.

To get an idea of the available props, you'll first want to navigate to the Quests section of SteamVR Home.

  1. Press the Menu button from SteamVR Home
  2. Navigate to the Quests section. You should now be shown a list of available Quests, which detail the locations and the props hidden insider them.
  3. Press Subscribe next to a location you plan to visit to begin downloading the SteamVR Home environment.

After downloading an environment, you can now jump in and hunt down the prop. Although some of the available locations can be relatively large, it's rare you'll spend more than a minute hunting down an item. In our experience, we found that simply touching all interactable objects in an environment will eventually uncover a reward.

To use any of the unlocked props, open the "Props" section of SteamVR Home's menu and use the tabs located at the top of the page. All of these props can introduce some interesting aspects to SteamVR Home, so make sure to experiment with them all!
