Trying to figure out how to clean your VR headset so that it stays shiny can seem daunting. After all, no one wants to accidentally screw up their headset when they are just trying to take care of it. There are a few different things that you'll need to properly clean your headset whether you have a Vive, or a Gear VR, but you may already have everything you need floating around the house.
Check out our tips for keeping your VR equipment clean.
Your best friend when it comes to keeping your gear clean is a microfiber cloth. Since most headsets are made of a combination of plastic and fabric, in many cases a simple wipe down will clean off the worst of the dust or grime.
All you need to do is wipe down your headset, being careful to give special attention to any vents, crevices, or ports. They are where dust is going to hide, but your microfiber cloth ought to pick them up without much of a problem.
Dust and hair can settle into just about any crevice without much help at all. Nobody wants to put their headset on and realize that there is dog hair stuck in the lenses. By keeping a can of compressed air around you can ensure that you never have anything stuck in your headset.
All you need to do is point the nozzle of the compressed air about six inches away from the dust and squeeze in short controller burst. This should easily dislodge anything that is stuck, and helps to make sure that you aren't accidentally touching or smearing anything over the lenses of your headset.
Consider replacement face pads
Depending on which headset you are using, then picking up a spare face pad or two can be a solid investment. Fabric face pads are going to soak up the oil and dirt and sweat of everyone who wears it, and if you start working up a sweat then you may find yourself needing to replace your facepad faster than you think.
While you can pull out the face pad on several headsets to clean it, replacing it when it wears out is still going to happen eventually. If you do decide to just clean the facepad instead of investing in a new one, just remember that it is fabric. It can be spot cleaned once taken out of the headset, but never apply moisture to the facepad when it is attached.
Put it away
One of the biggest issues in keeping your headset and it's controllers clean, is avoiding dust and detritus. This is why we suggest storing your headset in a safe place that isn't in your way when you aren't using it.
Dust, animal hair, and other detritus can easily settle onto or inside of your headset when it isn't being used. Particularly keeping your headset stored up high on a shelf or inside of a box for storage. By keeping your headset put up and away, you can ensure that what dust does built up will happen at a much slower rate.
Keeping your VR gear clean and ready to use doesn't have to be a hassle. Between compressed air, and a microfiber cloth, you can get the job done in just a few short minutes.
